Established in Xiamen University on July 24, 2014, Center for Oceans Law and the China Seas (XMU-COLCS) focuses on extensive and in-depth studies into issues relating to the East China Sea and the South China Sea, such as international laws and policies, cultural history, and the protection of marine environment and resources. In addition to the education of Master and Ph.D candidates, and professionals of higher levels in relevant fields, XMU-COLCS has also been committed to providing basis from the perspective of history and international law for China’s measures to maintain its maritime rights and interests and offering advice and suggestions on the environmental protection and resource development and management in the East China Sea and the South China Sea. XMU-COLCS has been striving to become a world-class think-tank in China.

XMU-COLCS boasts more than 100 fulltime or part-time researchers from both Xiamen University and other universities or institutions, among whom there are two Chinese State “One Thousand Elites Program” experts, one “Thousand Talents Program for Distinguished Young Scholars” expert, one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, three Cheung Kong Scholars, one Minjiang Scholar, one former Chief of the Office of Legal Affairs at International Seabed Authority (ISA), and one incumbent member of United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf.
